Florida Detectives Investigating Tragic Death of 8-Year-Old Following Fatal Dog Attack

A local Florida family is dealing with a tragic loss tonight following a fatal attack from a pair of dogs that took the life of their 8-year-old boy north of DeLand.

According to the Volusia Sheriff’s Office (VSO), a witness called 911 to report the attack on Monday, January 13, 2025, just before 5 pm. While deputies were en route to the area of Arabesque Drive and Airport Road off CR 15A, the witness began CPR on the child in an attempt to keep him stable until help arrived; unfortunately, he was unable to survive his injuries.

Responding deputies chased the loose dogs down the road upon arrival to secure the scene. Volusia County Animal Services officers were also called to the scene, capturing both animals — one described as a pit bull or similar bully breed, the other an unknown mixed breed.

“I don’t know what anyone can say to ease the immense pain this family is feeling tonight,” Sheriff Mike Chitwood said this evening. “This is a tragedy beyond comprehension, especially for those of us who are parents and grandparents. I can only ask our community to say a prayer of strength for this family and keep them in your hearts as they face their worst nightmare.”

As of publication, the dogs have been confiscated and are being held in quarantine by Animal Services in Volusia County. A joint investigation is currently underway, seeking to determine the circumstances surrounding the attack.

Sheriff Chitwood says he plans to provide an initial briefing to the public surrounding the tragedy on Tuesday, January 14, following the preliminary results uncovered during the first stretch of the investigation. Additional details are set to be released by VSO’s Public Affairs Office if and when they become available.
